In a world of loud protests and fast-paced activism, the Craftivist Movement offers a quieter, more reflective approach to campaigning for change. Combining craft and activism, craftivism uses hand-making — embroidery, knitting, quilting — as a peaceful tool to challenge injustice and encourage thoughtful conversations.
What is Craftivism?
Coined by writer Betsy Greer in 2003, craftivism is about slowing down, making with intention, and using creativity to engage hearts as well as minds. It transforms craft into a form of activism that is personal, impactful, and often beautiful — inviting curiosity rather than confrontation.
Why It Matters:
- Gentle Protest: Craftivism focuses on positivity and hope, encouraging empathy and dialogue rather than division.
- Mindful Activism: It allows campaigners to reflect deeply on issues while creating something lasting and meaningful.
- Accessible to All: You don’t need to shout to be heard — a simple stitched message or hand-crafted banner can be just as powerful.
Where to Experience Craftivism in the UK:
- Craftivist Collective (UK): Led by Sarah Corbett, this group promotes “gentle protest” through workshops, campaigns, and public art.
- People’s History Museum (Manchester): Exhibits craftivist works highlighting social justice issues. The articles on their website go back to 2019 and 2024, I can’t find anything for 2025. If this is wrong I am happy to change and create the relevant links.
Craft as a quiet force for change. Protest that invites reflection. Activism stitched with care.
