I’m particularly interested in how disability affected workers in the cotton mills, as it had a profound impact on my own family. My grandfather had to stop working in the mill due to health issues, and my grandmother lost her hearing from the constant noise of the machines. She used Mee-Mawing, a form of lip reading, to communicate. This personal connection drives my curiosity to explore the experiences of mill workers and how their health and disabilities shaped their lives.
