Textile Samples

I have completed a series of samples using an embellisher machine (please see image below)

The above image is from: http://awforsythe.com/machines/babylock_embellisher.html

I have used the following recycled fabrics:

Wool mix

Lightweight calico

Lightweight blue denim

Dark medium-weight blue denim

White polyester

I have also used:

Green lace

Green velvet ribbon

Sample 1

Sample 2

I like the samples above however, they don’t have a backing fabric, which has caused them to warp, the second image is more warped than sample one. I have come to the conclusion that not having a backing fabric creates unsightly warping, therefore I need to address this in future work.

Sample 3

Sample 3 shows warping on the right-hand side where I have used the embellisher machine too much. I am however, happy with the layering of these fabrics. I folded over the wool mix fabric and embellished it on the machine before adding the layers.

Sample 4

Sample 4 is a wool mix fabric with a lightweight calico fabric backing. Using a backing fabric has produced a more stable textile sample than the other three.

Sample 5

The final sample, sample 5 has a medium-weight blue denim fabric on the back. The fabric layers are lightly embellished to create a stable medium.

Conclusion:

The use of a backing fabric is important and the best fabric is denim. (not a stretch denim fabric)

Using a double wool layer creates a less stable medium as too much embellishing on the embellisher machine will warp and pull the fabric outwards, sample 3 is a good indicator of this.

A medium-weight denim fabric is the best backing fabric with a wool mix fabric layer for stabilising the textile medium, when lightly embellishing.
